Remembering Our History This Memorial Day

Remembering Our History This Memorial Day Did you know that Upper Arlington served as an Ohio National Guard training camp in 1916?   Photo via The Ohio Historical Society This temporary training camp, dubbed Camp Willis, was named after Ohio’s 47th governor, Frank B. Willis. Eight thousand servicemen were trained at Camp Willis, near where Jones Middle School now stands.  The troops were preparing to fight against Pancho Villa’s Mexican outlaws who were destroying American property along the border. Camp Willis was organized under the direction of Adjutant-General B.W. Hough. A majority of Ohio’s units had returned home when the entire National Guard was drafted into Federal service on Aug. 5, 1917, as the United States entered World War I. The camp was dismantled by September 1916. Upper Arlington development resumed shortly afterwards, and on March 20, 1918, Upper Arlington incorporated as a village. On this Memorial Day we remember those soldiers and all branches of the military, past and present who preserve our freedom....
